Key Differences Between POP3 and IMAP

• Synchronization: IMAP syncs read/unread status, folders, and sent items across all devices. POP3 only downloads emails, so changes on one device do not appear on others.
• Storage Location: IMAP keeps emails on the server so you can access them from anywhere. POP3 downloads emails to your phone or computer.
• Multi-Device Usage: IMAP is best if you check email on multiple devices. POP3 is meant for one device and may cause missing emails on others.
• Internet Dependence: IMAP needs an internet connection to check and send emails. POP3 allows offline access after emails are downloaded.
• Security: Both support encrypted connections. IMAP usually uses port 993, while POP3 uses port 995.

When to Choose Which

• Use IMAP if: You use multiple devices, want folders and read status synced everywhere, or need emails stored on the server.
