A rebar coupler is a mechanical device used to connect two steel reinforcing bars (rebars) end-to-end, creating a continuous length of reinforcement without the need for lap splicing.
Purpose: Joins rebars to transfer tensile, compressive, and shear forces effectively.
Material: Usually made from high-strength steel.
1. Threaded coupler – rebar ends are threaded and screwed into the coupler.
2. Tapered thread coupler – uses a tapered thread for easy installation.
3. Swaged coupler – coupler is pressed onto the rebar ends.
4. Grout-filled coupler – uses grout or epoxy inside the sleeve.
1. Reduces steel wastage.
2. Avoids congestion in reinforcement.
3. Saves time compared to lap splicing.
4. Maintains full tensile strength of the bar.
